Apparel retailers lately tend to decrease size ranges to reduce dead stock caused by unpopular size ranges despite risking customer dissatisfaction. The size assortment planning process by women's retail buyers is rarely studied, though it is important in inventory control. This research was developed to build a size assortment-planning model used by women's wear retail buyers in the eastern part of the US. The results of this study provided better educational methods for size assortment planning and a base for computer retailing simulation model development. The model development procedure followed three steps of screening processes: (a) secondary data analysis, (b) interviews with women's wear retail buyers, and (c) connection analysis. Interviewees selected by judgment sampling criteria (i.e., product type, company type, job experience) were first contacted by mail, fax, and phone calls. Ten women's wear retail buyers accepted two hours of interview and 30 minutes of validation procedure in their office. The company size of interviewees varies from gross sales of $2.0 million to $501.0 million. An interview scenario and activity cards validated by pilot tests were used to control the direction and consistency of the interview.(중략)
