This study analyzes different aspects of funeral rites and ceremonies among the Yoruba with reference to the Kemta of Egbaland, Southwest Nigeria. It adopts an ethnographical approach to examine the religious implications of these practices to the dead, family of the deceased and the community in which the deceased lived. Interviews were carried out among the Kemta dwellers at Anipupo village, Odeda Local Government Area, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The funeral rites performed by the family of Mosunmola Oyenekan were used as a reference point. It was discovered that the Kemta not only do not delay burying their dead unlike many other Yoruba, they also observe other funeral rites on different days after the dead has been laid to the earth. These rites with their funfair have religious and sociological relevance to the Kemta. Also, the final burial ceremony offers great importance because of its financial implications. The study concludes that though the Kemta have adopted some aspects of Christian and Islam funeral practices, they strictly adhere to their traditional burial rites. Instead of neglecting their traditions for the monotheistic burial rites, they have found ways to merge both practices as one in contemporary times. The study, therefore recommends that the family of the deceased should include immortalizing their dead to their funeral plans through philanthropic gestures, which would entrench the values of the dead into the community.
