One of important tenets of cognitive semantics is that language reflects embodied experience: we conceptualize ideas through our bodily experiences. To prove this embodiment hypothesis, researchers have focused much of their attention on expressions related to our body parts, our bodily perception, and our emotions. Research on expressions related to objects, on the other hand, is rare. Nonetheless, such expressions have an important role in providing evidence to the embodiment hypothesis, since objects are a part of the physical world and therefore a part of our embodied experience. This paper aims to contribute to the essential but neglected exploration of expressions related to objects by observing the various extended meanings of the concept UMBRELLA as it appears in linguistic and visual usage in Korean newspapers. The observation demonstrates that UMBRELLA means not only ‘protection,’ ‘influence,’ and ‘control,’ which were observed in Jung (2020), but it also means ‘support,’ ‘counterplan,’ ‘alliance,’ ‘concealment’, ‘parent group,’ and ‘sacrifice.’ The main source of the extended meanings is discussed from the perspective of cognitive semantics. We infer various uses and effects of umbrellas through our real-life experience of using umbrellas. When these inferences are mapped onto the target domain of the metaphor LIFE IS WEATHER, the resulting metaphorical entailments give rise to the various meanings of UMBRELLA. The result shows that meaning extensions of objects also support the embodiment hypothesis.
