The purpose of this paper is to investigate Postcolonial Subaltern in Hardy’s two novels through postcolonial literary theory by Homi Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak, two of the most eminent postcolonial scholars. Firstly, this paper is to turn out the aspects of subaltern focusing on Tess’s Femininity in Tess of the D’Urbbervilles. Tess is the Heroine for “the sexual reflection of woman” through the subaltern to recover the value of femininity. Secondly, it is to turn out the aspects of subaltern focusing on Jude’s Masculinity in Jude the Obscure. Jude is the Hero for “the sexual reflection of man” through the subaltern to recover the value of masculinity. The important point of postcolonial subaltern on gender’s discourse is to overcome dichotomous thinking and to achieve ambivalent equality in the modern society. Therefore Hardy is a true humanist novelist through constant exploration about ‘Postcolonial Subaltern’ not as the oppressed subject, but as the esteemed subjects in above two novels.
