This paper focused on the aspect of chronophotography which deals with transformability of reality. I argue that we need to consider the transformational aspect of reality as much as its indexicality, which is an exact display of reality. By using chronophotography as photographic technology, Marey tried to find the objective truths of the mechanical world. As such, he used photography as a scientific tool. Some of René Descartes’s ideas can help explain the double sidedness of present reality in chronophotography. As for its indexicality, I compare Descartes’s mechanistic worldview to Marey’s physiological aim to see how these are similar. Secondly, for the transformability of chronophotography, I refer to Descartes’s description about how alphabets represent the various qualities of reality. It is one of the main grounds that supports my argument that chronophotography does not show reality precisely. Consider that the technical mechanism of chronophotography was adopted in cinema, such analysis can give a clue that indirectly demonstrates the ambivalence of cinema in which the reproduction of reality and the transformation of reality conflict and coexist at the same time.
