The purpose of this study is about the semantic formation of the verbal nouns in English. As for the purpose, the study divides into five types of the semantic derivation from the meanings of the English base verbs to those of their derived nouns, such as ‘from the prototype to the peripheral meaning’, ‘from the peripheral meaning to the prototype’ and vice versa. However, not all the meanings of the base verbs are derived to their nouns and the meanings of the derived nouns are formed, which are not involved in the meanings of their base verbs. As for the possible explanation, the study is to suggest that there is a certain order of meaning extension, derived noun formation, and semantic derivation. The assertion possibly explains the semantic formation of the English verbal nouns which are not involved in the meanings from the base verbs and how to develop the specific meanings of the verbal nouns.
