Gender equality is constantly being emphasized in the areas of childcare and household labor due, in large part, to the growth in double-income households. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of paternal perceptions regarding the division of parenting and household labor on the psychological well-being of fathers with young children in double and single-income households. For this purpose, data was gathered through a survey of 401 fathers of children aged 3-6. The statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlations, and hierarchical regression analysis. There were several major findings derived from the analysis. Regardless of the household type, all fathers believed that their wives spend more time on parenting and household labor. When these fathers perceived that household labor is shared equally, they were more likely to experience happiness. In the case of double-income households, the less a father recognized the time his wife spent participating in household labor, the greater his happiness. On the other hand, in lower-income households, the more a father recognized the time his wife spent participating in household labor, the higher his perceived depression. When he did more work than his wife, he perceived it as a fair division of labor. In the case of single-income households, duration of marriage and occupation type were more important variables than the sharing of household labor. However, the shorter the number of working hours per week, the higher the perceived depression. The implications of these results on the parenting and household labor policies of fathers with young children are discussed in detail.
