Burmese nominative ‘-HA’ remains still in an unknown area. So far, various scholars have observed that ‘-HA’ has some connection with topic structure. Also, comparative studies with the Japanese topic marker ‘-WA’ have been repeatedly conducted due to their similarities. However, the function of this marker ‘-HA’ has not yet been generalized.
Even if ‘-HA’ is a kind of nominative marker, its frequency and distribution are quite limited. It is mainly used in written style rather than colloquial one and appears more frequently in narrative than dialogue. It is used in describing events or states, conveying lessons or proverbs, speaking to oneself, and so on. Since it is very difficult to generalize these usages, ‘-HA’ has been continuously explained as an ambiguous function of ‘emphasis’. Moreover, this issue is sometimes avoided by presuming it as a separate style or cultural element.
The purpose of this study is to outline the history of ‘-HA’ research, to review previous studies, and to define the nature of this nominative marker. In the research process, it is confirmed that ‘-HA’ is not an emphasis marker or topic marker. Nor is it a separate colloquial style. As a result, it can be suggested that ‘-HA’ has a function of "background specifying."
