The global #MeToo movement has once again brought gender issues strongly back into the public discourse. Considering literature as a window to the culture of a society, this article focuses on the continuing issue of gender inequality in one Asian country from a historical perspective. Koji Suzuki’s bestselling novel Ringu was designed to awaken Japanese society to a need for change in relation to evolving family gender roles. Underpinning the novel’s plot was a message of the damaging effects on both women and men of being trapped in societal gender traditions. Analysis of Suzuki’s original novel in relation to the climate of social reaction to gender in 1990s Japan demonstrates how the author expressed his ideas on the need for gender equalization in family life and the responsibility of men to support the needed change. The popularity in Japan of Ringu in the 1990s and of a recent Korean novel about gender issues in the 2010s indicates a continued cry for change in that society in relation to gender inequality.
