This study investigated the mediating effect of depression in a relationship between happiness of elderly people and their satisfaction with leisure/work. To achieve the research goal, data from 4,890 elderly people over the age of 65 were used. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, and hierarchical regression were carried out to analyze the data. In the analysis results, depression showed a partial mediating effect in a relationship between happiness of elderly people and their satisfaction with leisure/work. In other words, intervention for diminishing elderly people’s depression is necessary considering the observation of the mediating effect of depression in a relationship between satisfaction with leisure/work and happiness. Also, while intervention for enhancing happiness through the route of satisfaction with leisure/work is important, directly intervening in individual’s depression problem is also critical. Based on the results, this paper proposed diverse practical and policy suggestions aimed at improving elderly people’s happiness. With important findings of this study as an empirical research, there are following limitations. One of shorcomings was that there can be diverse psychosocial variables in this relationship. Further studies that consider other variables are needed in future studies.
