This study was performed to evaluate the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, SmartFresh<sup>TM</sup>) treatment on fruit quality attributes and cell wall metabolism in ‘Picnic’ apple during cold storage. After harvest, fruits were treated 0 (control), 0.5 and 1 µL·L<SUP>-1</SUP> 1-MCP for 18 h and then stored at 0°C for up to 6 months. In fruit quality attributes, the flesh firmness and titratable acidity (TA) were 81.2 N and 0.51% at harvest, respectively, which were gradually decreased in all treatments during storage, but they were higher in 1-MCP-treated fruits, compared to control fruits in cold storage. In addition, all 1-MCP-treated fruits inhibited internal ethylene concentration (IEC) during storage. However, the results of flesh firmness, TA, and IEC were not significantly between the two 1-MCP concentrations. Other quality attributes such as weight loss, soluble solids content and peel color variables (L*, a* and b*) were not significantly observed in all treatments during storage.
