In this article, I investigated Jane Addams’s political and social ideas and her activities during the Progressive Era. In order to solve a variety of social problems, Jane Addams asserted that it is necessary to develop social democracy, which is grounded in active communications and connections among diverse people. By organizing multiple activities at Hull-House, then, she hoped to build a democratic community, where people could learn from each other and care for others. The activities at Hull-House Clubs, for instance, encouraged people to foster individual abilities in order to lead a collaborative life with others. Moreover, the Labor Museum at Hull-House was a part of educational centers for immigrants. In the Labor Museum, immigrants showed the values of their own traditions, cultures, and labor activities to non-immigrants. Overall, Jane Addams administered all programs at Hull-House with the strong principles that respecting others should be the main foundation of the U.S. society. In this sense, it is concluded that Jane Addams made the Progressive Era more progressive.
