In Japanese, “interrupted speech" is an expression at the end of a sentence that conveys the speaker"s intention without completing the sentence. In this study, we analyzed Japanese native speakers" interrupted speech in apology situations from the perspective of responsibility and function.
As a result, it was found that when the responsibility for the apology is placed on an internal factor, more phrases are used than when the responsibility is placed on an external factor. In the case of internal factors, the functions of “avoidance of judgment" and “seeking opinion/consensus" were most frequently observed. In the case of “avoidance of judgment," the thought verb “omou" co-occurred with interrupted speech. Regarding, “seeking opinion/consensus," it co-occurred with “kedo." Through categorizing by function, the functions of “avoidance of judgment" and “seeking opinions and sympathy" are more common in internal factors. This suggests that speakers try to relax their speech and repair their relationship with listeners by combining these expressions. On the other hand, “factual explanation" and “information supplement" functions were often observed in external factors, where speakers attempted to repair the relationship by expressing reasons and information while using these functions.
