Born in Belgium, Father Vincent Lebbe (1877~1940) arrived at China in 1901 as a Vincentian priest. Distinct from most foreign missionaries in China, Father Lebbe did not reveal a sense of racial superiority, and his practice of indigenization thoroughly embodied the local Chinese culture. In consequence of his Catholic Actions in China, Maximum Illud, an apostolic letter issued by Pope Benedict XV, was promulgated in 1919 and a papal envoy was dispatched to China. Father Lebbe, believing the necessities in the advent of a Chinese bishop in the Chinese church with only foreign bishops available, urged the Vatican numerously for support. The Vatican appointed the first Chinese bishop in 1926, and Father Lebbe, who actualized the birth of a Chinese bishop, naturalized as a Chinese in 1927.
Father Lebbe, who became a Chinese voluntarily, devoted himself to China"s anti-Japanese Salvation activities when Japan invaded China in the 1930s. He organized a relief team to help the wounded crossed the country. The Chinese a monastic order he founded performed medical volunteer work on the front lines during the Anti-Japanese War. His active participation in the war fully expressed the patriotism of the Catholics and contributed to the victory of the war. Although his 40-year mission in China ended from illness while participating in Salvation activities during the anti-Japanese war, he presented a new milestone in the indigenization of Chinese Catholicism, with the spirit of “China to Chinese, Chinese to Christ”.
This paper, while comprehensively grasping the studies of both church history and Chinese history, analyzes the Salvation activities Father Lebb led as an extension of his indigenization. Father Lebbe"s attitude and practice of indigenization and salvation in China deserves to be used as a valuable precedent for the betterment of Catholicism in China going forward.
