Purpose
Decreased iron absorption is one of the most important post-gastrectomy syndromes. We aimed to find the incidence and risk factors of iron depletion in post-gastrectomy patients with normal pre-operative ferritin level.
Method
Among the patients underwent curative gastrectomy for the gastric cancer from April 2009 to December 2015, patients who were available to follow up more than three years without recurrence and baseline ferritin depletion level (<15ug/L) were enrolled. The study population were divided into ferritin non-depletion (FnD) group and ferritin depletion (FD) group according to the subsequent ferritin depletion post-operatively. Risk factor analysis for FD was done with clinicopathologic factors and preoperative ferritin level. Potential menstruation patient (PMP) was defined female patients under 55 years old. Reconstruction method was divided according to the possibility for food passage through duodenum.
Result
A total 445 including 199 FD and 246 FnD were analyzed. While female patients were more involved in FD without significance, PMP (FD vs FnD = 27 (13.6%) vs 13 (5.3%), P=0.004), smoking history (FD vs FnD = 48 (24.1%) vs 84 (34.1%), P=0.028) and duodenal bypassing reconstruction (FD vs FnD = 169 (84.9%) vs 175 (71.1%), P=0.001) wer ... 전체 초록 보기
