Purpose
Anemia is quite common in those with a critical illness. It can persist after intensive care unit (ICU) care. Although it can cause various symptoms, studies on the duration and frequency of anemia after discharge from ICU are insufficient. We have adapted a restrictive transfusion strategy to reduce the risk of receiving a transfusion and the volume of pRBCs transfused. Such strategy might increase the frequency of anemia. The purpose of this study to determine the prevalence of anemia at the time of ICU discharge and identify distinct anemia recovery profiles.
Methods
A retrospective study was conducted from January 2015 to June 2020. Participants included 4,383 adults who were admitted to ICU. Our ICU implemented restrictive transfusion strategy. Hb levels before ICU admission, after ICU discharge to general ward stay, and at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after hospital discharge were collected and categorized by anemia severity (mild, Hb ≥ 10.0 to < 12.0 g/dL in women or ≥ 10.0 to < 13.5 g/dL in men; moderate, ≥ 8.0 to < 10.0 g/dL; severe, < 8.0 g/dL; and life threatening, < 6.5g/dL) for each period.
