Korea took its first step in entering overseas fishing grounds in 1957, when Jinam, a vessel operated by Jedong Industries, began its tuna longline exploratory fisheries in the Indian Ocean. Since then, Korea's position in overseas fishing has been expanded as fisheries, such as longline, trawl, purse seine, and jigging, have advanced into the Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. Korea's distant water fisheries had an early development phase in the 1960s, went through a maturing phase in the 1970-1980s, and, after the enforcement of the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the establishment of 200 nautical miles EEZ of the coastal states, entered a diminished phase in the 1990s, which continues up to present. In particular, the enforcement of the UNCLOS has changed our concept of the use of fisheries resources from an indiscreet and competitive way of practice to the conservation and sustainable use of the fisheries resources, and the regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) have shown to enforce stronger regulations in recent years, both in which Korea's distant water fisheries have faced a new set of challenges.
