This study focuses on analyzing Middleton and Dekker’s The Roaring Girl in terms of gender and class as social practices through Moll’s cross-dressing implying an act of resistance against the sexual inequality and prejudice in patriarchal Jacobean society. Middleton and Dekker portray the figure of Moll Cutpurse as a persona of Mary Frith on stage to present a character that transcends the boundaries of class and gender in spite of her obscurity and complexity. Through the action of the play, Moll’s dual identity emphasizing manly woman with female body in male attitudes displays her own subjectivity by empowering identity as selfhood. Moll in men’s clothes reveals her strong presence with not only her appearance but also her behavior to challenge the expectations of traditional roles beyond her class and gender. She ridicules patriarchal values and class order of her time by reversal of conventionally divided stereotypes of gender, thereby subverting institutional categories of gender and class identity. In spite of Moll’s rebellion against the existing social order, the play does not provide a solution for better reformation, which is the characteristic and limitation of city comedy, The Roaring Girl.
