This study focuses on the relation between cross-dressing, gender, post-colonialism, and New Anatomies by Timberake Wertenbaker. The basis of the study is gender which cross-dressing in relation to post-colonialism attempts to problematize and subvert. First, this study examines how feminist playwrights have developed the meaning of gender, and how their studies have been related to the post-colonial gender binarism. It is because gender is always mentioned in the analysis of cross-dressing which is a main theatrical apparatus and post-colonialism which seeks to revolutionize the hierarchy of race, gender, and culture. Both cross-dressing and post-colonialism have anti-establishment qualities concerning gender; the former resists the stereotyped gender meaning and the latter rejects the binary gender knowledge that western imperial powers have produced. Second, this study also observes how this work employs cross-dressing for troubling and subverting stereotyped gender. In the work, there are two types of cross-dressing: Isabelle’s cross-dressing and the other actresses’. It will analyze their implications and subsequent effects. At last, there is the necessity of a new anatomy or subject that deserves to receive an interest in the chaotic era when a new imperialism appear.
