It is generally accepted that argument realization of resultative verb compounds in Chinese is one of the most difficult problems in RVC research. The causal chain theory, proposed by Croft (2012), argues that the initiator and the endpoint of the transmission of the force in the causal chain are realized as the subject and the object, respectively. Based on this theory, I simplify and effectively explain the mechanism of RVC’s argument realization: among the various participants related to the two RVC verbs, the elements acting as the initiator and the endpoint in the profiled segment of the causal chain are realized as the RVC’s subject and object, respectively. Additionally, the causal chain theory also provides a convincing theoretical basis to solve some of the challenges of RVCs, including the intransitive RVCs, the transitive RVCs with the second verb (i.e., buyu) not indicating its object (i.e., the so-called shadow argument), the reversed RVC and the like.
