In an effort to find cosmetic materials with few side effects and increased benefit to human skin, we examined compound extracts from Zanthoxylum schinifolium (ZS). Component analysis and physiological activities were examined using a 20% ethanol extract from ZS. Palmitic acid and oleic acid analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) were determined to be 2.65 mg/g palmitic acid and 7.60 mg/g oleic acid in the ZS extract. The linearity, precision, and accuracy of chlorogenic acid was evaluated using HPLC. Analysis of the antioxidant activity of 10 g/L of ZS found that DPPH radical scavenging activity was 54.51±0.92%, ABTS radical scavenging activity was 47.30±0.32%, total polyphenol content was 75.58±1.87 mgGAE/g, and total flavonoid content was 13.07±0.40 mgQE/g. In B16-F10 cells, cytotoxicity was not observed up to a concentration of 300 μg/mL of ZS extract. Tyrosinase enzyme activity was inhibited in a concentration dependent manner according to ZS extract treatment, and inhibitory activity was similar to that of the functional compound niacinamide at 100 μg/L. In RAW 264.7 macrophages, toxicity was not observed up to the concentration of 100 μg/L of ZS extract, and cell viability decreased in a concentration-dependent manner at subsequent concentrations. The NO production inhibitory activity by LPS was inhibited by 13% compared to the control when 1,000 μg/L of ZS extract was treated. The amount of TNF-α secretion decreased by 39% compared to the control group at the concentration of 100 μg/L of ZS extract, and suppressed the production of inflammationinducing factors. Overall, results indicated that ZS should be considered as a natural cosmetic material due to indications that ZS contains ingredients that are beneficial to skin health, and it has excellent antioxidant and antiinflammatory activity.
