The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, NO production, and whitening effects of hot water and ethanol extracts of Ecklonia cava were compared to find out the potential of the two extracts as functional cosmetic ingredient. Results showed that the content of polyphenol was 1.4 times higher in the ethanol extract(249.75 mg/g) than in the hot-water extract(168.50 mg/g). The electron donating ability of hot-water and ethanol extract were 87.75% and 93.62% at 1,000 μg/mL, respectively. The antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, E. coli and P. acnes was not observed for the water extract, but the ethanol extract showed high antimicrobial activity. Especially, the antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis was the highest and noteworthy. From the study on inhibition of NO production using RAW 264.7 cells, it was confirmed that the ethanol extract significantly inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibition rate of tyrosinase activity was 34.95% for the hot water extract and 36.58% for the ethanol extract at 100 μg/mL, whereas the melanin inhibitory effect was 74.02% at 100 μg/mL for the ethanol extract. From the above results, it can be confirmed that the ethanol extract of Ecklonia cava can be used as a functional cosmetic material with antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, whitening effect.
