Secretary-General of the United Nation, implored an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world, on the heels of WHO’s announcement of the coronavirus as a pandemic. However, by that time, a totally difference situation was unfolding across the South China Sea, which is regarded by many as a global powder-keg. The United States and China, so-called G2, were supposed to work together in the face of global pandemic crisis. Nevertheless, the pandemic became a factor that accelerated a geopolitical competition and conflictual relation between two superpowers. The purpose of this article is drawing potential drawbacks of Indo-Pacific Strategy initiated by Trump administration and their strategic implications, while keeping a vigilant eye on the context in which a corona pandemic tends to promote conflictual rather than cooperative relation between Washington and Beijing. For this purpose, the Chapter II followed by Introduction, will undertake an in-depth analysis on defense and security related policy of Trump administration, with emphasis on Washington’s perception of Beijing as evidenced by a series of official documents and reports in defense-security area which have been published since 2017. The focus of Chapter III is a methodical review of Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI) which was designed to counter China’s A2/AD as a part of implementing military dimension of Indo-Pacific Strategy, as well as American Marine Corps’ ‘Force Design 2020’ of which objective is to implement the PDI in the context of Western Pacific theater. Chapter IV will attempt to identify problems of Trump Administration’s Indo-Pacific Strategy on the basis of the result in the previous Chapter. Chapter V will discuss the prospect of the U.S.-China relations in the post-Corona era and corresponding strategic implications for the Republic of Korea.
