This article attempts to analyze the context in which ‘the Research Group on the Spoliation of the Jewish Property in France’, the so-called ‘Mattéoli Research Group’ was set up in March 1997, in addition to the activities of the group and the outcome. The mission of the group was to conduct research on the spoliation of the Jewish property in Nazi-occupied France and its restitution and compensation after the war. This group was designed to resolve the suspicions raised by the press since 1995, regarding the existence of the Jewish property unreturned in post-war France. The Mattéoli Research Group disclosed the various ways of the spoliation and restitution, and estimated the amounts of both cases in the final report presented in April 2000. Its estimates were not accurate because of the lack of the related documents themselves rather than its short working period. However its proposal was decisive in establishing two succeeding institutions, the Commission for the Compensation of Victims of Spoliation(CIVS) and the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah. The CIVS was in charge of the individual compensations to deprived Jews, and the Foundation supported projects disseminating knowledge of the holocaust and provided financial aid to survivors in need. Without the proposal of the research group, the presence of these two institutions would be inconceivable.
