This paper examines the debate between Hainsworth and Rawson concerning the violence in the early poetry of Hughes and suggests how the debate alludes to the ecocritical possibility of Hughes’s early poetry. The paper also reads a few of Hughes’s early poems to show how they have some ecological aspects. The debates between Hainsworth and Rawson tend to interpret Hughes’s themes only in the framework of the natural world without perusing their diverse meanings. The debate shows ecological characteristics in several ways. It tells us that Hughes tried to recognize and understand the objects of the natural world as such. This attitude suggests that Hughes perceived nature not as it but as you/our partner. The debate also tells us that Hughes’s poem opened up a possibility to see the animal as an agency, and it thereby suggests that Hughes leads the reader to reconsider the hierarchy between humans and nonhumans inherent in the view of nature. Hughes’s poems such as “The Hawk in the Rain,” “The Jaguar,” and “Hawk Roosting” exemplify that Hughes is moving away from a human-centered worldview to an ecological-centered worldview. For him, hawks and jaguars are actants who construct their worlds and trans-corporeal beings who are interconnected in the instinctual cycle of the natural world. Through his representation of animals, Hughes puts the natural world in the center of poetic discourse. The Hawk in the Rain and Lupercal predict Hughes’ environmental and ecological consciousness seen in his later works.
