Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in freshwaters sources, recently. This occurrence has prompted discussions on possible consequences for human health. Until now, > 96% of the identified MPs are related to marine aquatic system and most of them have confirmed origin from terrestrial and freshwater systems. There is a large data gap on health effects of MPs and there is a need to critically analyze the recent studies on MPs in freshwaters.
