The groundwater changes by earthquakes have been documented since the ancient Greek period. Responded parameters include the water level, temperature, composition, color, and discharge rates, and they are observed even at great distances for huge earthquakes. These co-seismic groundwater changes were attributed to the compaction of overlying alluvium during propagation of the seismic wave, permeability alteration, or temporal clogging by weathering products. In Korea, changes in wells were documented in the Chronicles of the Chosun Dynasty, and several research articles reported co-seismic water level and composition changes by recent inland or distant earthquakes.
