Ballet originated from France in the 17th century. During the reign of Louis XIV, ballet expanded to become what it is known as today throughout the world. However, to better understand ballet and its origins we must analyze the language and terminology of ballet. The analysis begins with dance baroque, and for this, we rely on the choreographic notation of R.-A. Feuillet and P. Rameau. This analysis allows us to clarify the origin of modern day ballet terms, and secondly to compare these with the terminology of the baroque dance. In studying these notations, it’s important to realize that there is more in the notation than purely descriptive body movement. There is an entire language, history and culture within the notation. Thus understanding the terminology of ballet is necessary not only for dancers practicing ballet, but also for spectators who can discover historic and cultural values within the language itself.
