Samulnori 사물놀이 is mentioned as one of the successful story in the Korean music history by its acknowledgement worldwide, and became the representative artistic content. However, the history of its earliest age that the samulnori was formed, and about naming are not as much as simple compared to the other field of study. This article deals with specific materials or evidences including preceding studies, and to check errors or uncertain parts about samulnori’s forming stage. In the article, the first performance-related materials were deeply reviewed in accordance with verbal evidences, and practical materials. The results are as follows: Firstly, it is uncovered that the very first samulnori performance was onto the stage on February 22~23, 1978, held at Konggansarang 空間舍廊, hosted by Folk Music Group Sinawi 民俗樂會시나위 under the tile of “The 1st Traditional Music’s Night”. The players on that night were Kim Tŏk-su 金德洙, Kim Yong-bae 金龍培, Ch’oe T’ae-hyŏn 崔泰鉉, and Yi Chong-dae 李宗大. Secondly, former studies show the name of samulnori was used not on the first performance, but later than that. However, it is found that the name of samulnori was used from the very first performance. Thirdly, The first performers were Kim Tŏk-su, Kim Yong-bae, Ch’oe T’ae-hyŏn, and Yi Chong-dae. Later, some of the members were substituted by Ch’oe Chong-sil 崔鍾實, Ch’oe Chong-sŏk 최종석, or Yi Kwang-su 李光秀. Who known as the very first samulnori members were Kim Dŏk-su, Kim Yong-bae, Ch’oe Chong-sil, and Yi Kwang-su. Their first official activity was on September 1980. Fourthly, kkwaenggwari 꽹과리 plays were extremely brilliant so that they can represent different rhythmic patterns across the nation. Samulnori gained its heyday in the 1980s. After that time, Kim Yong-bae took its major role in seated version, and Yi Kwang-su mostly takes an important role for standing version.
