The present study is aimed to describe the formative characteristics and meanings of conjunctive adverb of Jeju dialect, and then examine its functional aspect of discourse. In Jeju dialect, the conjunctive adverbs in form of ‘그러- (guru-)’ are derived from ‘경다 (gyunghada)’ and expressed in the form of ‘경고 (gyunghago)' and '경난 (gyunghana)’. These conjunctive adverbs are shortened again to ‘겨고 (gyugo), 거고 (gugo), 계고 (gyego), 게고 (gego)’, playing several roles in a sentence. They are used a discourse marker as well as to connect sentences, which is the original function of conjunctive adverb. In Jeju dialect, conjunctive adverbs in form of ‘경- (gyung-)’ are made when ‘경다 (gyunghada)’ is connected with such connective suffix as ‘-고 (-go), -나 (-na), and -니까 (-nika)’. They are expressed in 3 types: ‘경- (gyungha-)’와 ‘겨/거- (gyu/gu-), 계/게- (gye/ge-)’, which are the characteristics of phoneme deletion and addition, and monophthongization. Structural analysis of the forms of discourse markers showed that it is difficult to shorten such discourse markers including ‘여- (hayu-)’나 ‘헤- (he-)’. In addition, conjunctive adverbs as discourse marker are used in diverse situations. They maintain the form of conjunctive adverb, but its meaning has to be found in the context of discourse because their original meaning as conjunctive adverb have been weakened. In this respect, this study summarized the functions discourse marker plays in the relationship between speaker and listener and in the relation of topics. Besides, it found that conjunctive adverb that is used as conjunctive adverb is not limited to its position to use, can be skipped, and replaced with other discourse marker.
