Anne Sexton, one of the pioneering American confessional poets, led a life as a typical “suburban housewife” in America during 1950’s and the following decades, and gave in her poems vivid expression to a variety of painful experiences and innermost feelings in a patriarchal society. Indeed, most of her poems, deeply rooted in her existential condition as a sensitive female in the male-dominant society, confront squarely “reality and its hard facts.” While “Housewife” succinctly exemplifies how the housework oppresses women’s lives, “Her Kind” enacts the female speaker’s more challenging search for her new identity in more dramatic situations. In a more radical way than the two poems “Consorting with Angels” casts a doubt on the stereotyped distinction of femininity, gender, and body. In “In Celebration of My Uterus” the speaker, focusing on the genital organ as a source of her femininity, asserts female creativity and fertility. Though not an avowed feminist, she explored with extraordinary sensitivity, candor, and enthusiasm lots of tabooed subjects and has continued to serve as an exemplar for those who embarked on defining femininity in a new perspective.
