Published in 1765 by the Qing Dynasty, Tangshisanbaishou was compiled to teach children poetry and has been one of the most popular poetry collection to date. This study is aimed to analyze the method, criteria, characteristics involving the selection of poems from ‘Tangshisanbaishou’, and the poetic theories that had an impact on the selection. To attain the objective, this study compared the collections of Wang Shi Zhen and Shen De Qian, the leading poets working during the early Qing Dynasty in China until the publication of Tangshisanbaishou. It is because about 80% of the poems in Tangshisanbaishou are also included in Wang Shi Zhen's ‘Gushixuan’, ‘Tangxiansanmeiji’, and ‘Tangrenwanshoujuejuxuan’ and Shen De Qian's ‘Tangshibiecaiji’. For the method of comparison, this study compared the list of poems selected from Tangshisanbaishou and those of the 4 collections above and analyzed them particularly focusing on period, writer, style, and theme. In addition, another comparison was made on the principles and poetic theory of compilers, which affected the selection of poems from Tangshisanbaishou, between the collection of Tangshisanbaishou and those of Wang Shi Zhen and Shen De Qian. In conclusion, it was found that ‘Tangshisanbaishou’ is based on the poetic principles of Wang Shi Zhen, which was invigorated by those of YanYu during Sung dynasty. It also adopted the merits of Shen De Qian's poetic principles theory, which critically accepted the poetic principles of Wang Shi Zhen. As a result, the poems written in the early-Tang dynasty are mainly included, but Shen De Qian included several poems of Li Po and Tu Fu, which had been neglected. Of the poems by poets during mid-Tang and late-Tang dynasty, some famous ones were included. Some of Kung Kyuonesi, which were excluded by Shen De Qian, found its place in Tangshisanbaishou. Wang Shi Zhen was influenced by Wang Shim's selected poems and poetic principles, but mainly compiled the poems whose themes are close to daily life and useful for socialization as well as poetry writing methods for children, so they could be practically helpful for children to culture character and social nature that a member of a society should possess.
