This essay illuminates the postcolonial implications of the Irish life recollected after the end of Ireland that Eilís Ní Dhuibhne’s The Bray House envisages. A critical concern of this essay is scientific modernity Robin Lagerlof in the novel represents when she perpetuates the English colonial logic reducing Irish total deaths to an Irish problem by her archeological positivism. Echoing Robinson Crusoe who colonized a tropical island by his modernity, Robin is a scientist making the nature of Irish history self-inflicted deaths in the name of science. Robin’s modernity invoking the irreversible and linear time is problematized when she fails to make sense Thomas Mann’s Hans Castorp. Hans Castorp betokens the atemporal aspect of emotionality underlying historical consciousness. The apocalyptic picture in The Bray House entails an emotional intensity allegorically evoking English guilt over Irish colonial deaths throughout the history of English colonialism.
