This study focuses on motherhood in The Bluest Eye written by Toni Morrison. The Bluest Eye is the story of a young black girl, Pecola, who loathes herself, rejects her blackness and has her spirit destroyed. Because of her troubled and tragic life, Pecola descends into depression, madness and insanity. What is noteworthy here is that Pecola does not receive the care of her mother when she experiences difficulties. To show the sequence of this process, Pecola and her mother relationship with each other are explored and the duties of motherhood extend to Geraldine and Mrs. MacTeer who are other mothers in the neighborhood. To verify this, first, the definition of motherhood will be summed up depending on the times and cultures. This study emphasizes the importance of motherhood in the growth of children. From Morrison’s perspective, Mrs. MacTeer is the most ideal mother for children. Even though Mrs. MacTeer was poor, she did her best for her children and she stood squarely against wrong to protect her children. Toni Morrison hopes that African-American mothers will have real maternal mothers like Mrs. MacTeer, even though their lives are harsh and exhausting.
