The beginning of North Korean music research began with the report of the government task in 1978. Knowing North Korea as an enemy is highly political, and it is bound to be aggressive by the need to dis- tinguish between inferiority and superiority. This view is still in progress. But with political issues, academic growth has begun to go beyond politics. This can be seen as an interest in music in political science. In addition, the growth of music academy is remarkable. The study of North Korean music in 1990s and early 2000s was concentrated after the 1980s. However, in early 2010, North Korean music was done in the early part of the division. Through these researches, it can be said that North Korean music research is moving from knowing of North Korea to understanding of North Korea. In addition, North Korean music research is growing as one of the branches of Korean music studies. Therefore, future research on North Korean music should not be confined to traditional music, western music, or ethnic music, but should be promoted as a way of integrating Korean culture.
