The purpose of this study is to investigate music-creating activities in South Korean elementary and secondary music education through the analysis of Korean music textbooks and music teachers’ practices and perceptions, and to discuss potential challenges and explore its future directions. The realm of music-creating activities had been more poorly presented than other musical activities in Korean school music textbooks and also rarely taught in the music classroom. The researcher discussed the phenomenon of this poor music-creating education and its potential reasons, challenges, and difficulties. This study suggested the followings. First, music teachers’ understanding of music-creating activities and creativity should be developed as well as related musical competences through teacher education. Second, music teachers’ perception of the necessity of music-creating activities besides its importance is related to whether they teach them or not. Third, Korean elementary and secondary education as well as music teacher education should develop both a systematic curriculum and an educational environment that promote music-creating activities. Lastly, Korean school music textbooks should incorporate a higher proportion of music-creating activities than present.
