Synthesis of nanoparticles having well-defined small sizes especially less than ~5 nm has been in the forefront of research attention in diverse fields including biomedical imaging and diagnostics, drug delivery, sensors, and catalysis because of unique features of such very small particles. Characterization and analysis of such tiny particles still remains challenging due to the extremely small dimension of the particles, too. Here, I present two main research topics. The first topic is the synthesis of dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs) and their useful properties for analytical applications. Specifically, we synthesized Pt DENs having different sizes over the range of 1-4 nm, but were fairly uniform and monodispersed in size with subnanometer accuracy.
