Purpose The pupillary light reflex (PLR) test is the methodof examining the immediate reaction of the pupil by lightstimuli, and the dysfunctions in autonomic nervous systemcan be evaluated quickly and easily through this method. This study addressed a new method of measuring pupillarylight reflex features. Methods The proposed system in this study utilizes the flashLED of a smartphone to provide light stimuli to the patient’spupil, and the resulting reactions are recorded as images andvideos to be analyzed using smartphone app and MATLAB. Results In case of video recording, the user can turn the flashon and off at the desired moment and data acquisition timewas set to be 6 seconds. For the image mode, the system wasdesigned to acquire one image prior to light stimulation and4 images after light stimulation, so that temporal changes inpupil can be compared. As such, image was processed in away of changing RGB channel to HSV channel throughMATLAB program so that pupil of photographed imagecould be recognized without difficulty. Conclusions The system developed in this study utilizessmartphones so that anyone can easily utilize the toolconveniently without restrictions of time and location. Further,other strengths include the fact that light stimulation can beprovided using the flash function built within the smartphones,as well as the fact that patient data could be saved and managedeasily, and shared using the email transmission function.
