This study is to examine Ranajit Guha’s writing of history in order to identify his epistemological singularity of historiography. One argues that Guha’s and Subaltern Studies conincide in terms of research objective with the ‘history from below’, one of whose major aims is to write and recover subject which so far has not yet been identified as a full-fledged one and has not been granted historical citizenship in historical sholarship. Although his urge to restore the subaltern subject as a sovoreign subject can be in fact verified, however, there is obviously some aspects of his historical writings that interrupt such identification in his historiography. In Guha’s works, on the one hand, we can find his attempts to listen subaltern’s real voice and describe her/him as a complete subject. it is also a fact, on the other hand, that subaltern is represented as negation or a result of substraction in the same works. This irony can be called vacillation of the subalternity. What is also quite remarkable is that some aspects of his historiography seem to resonate with Louis Althusser’s thought. Though we cannot find any explicit reference of Althusser in Guha’s works, his epistemological discourse of historiography is implictly connected with Althusser’s symptomatic reading. In addition, the configuration of general power relations Guha formulates can be regarded as an overdetermined structure.
