Guidelines in evaluation have not been consistent in previous research and there has been little research directly concerning the effect of evaluation types on the evaluation itself. Before shifting the responsibility to the teacher trainers, the need for elaborated evaluation should be empirically established. To this end, the present study aimed to compare three conditions of self-evaluation based on the analysis of previous research: no criteria (self-reflection with no domains), simplified criteria (one item in each domain), and detailed criteria (three items in each domain). Twenty-nine pre-service English teachers participated in three types of self-evaluation for the same microteaching. The results suggested that their evaluation was inconsistent among the evaluation types. The inconsistency was evident in relation to ‘configuration’ and the ‘rank’ of evaluation in each domain of the criteria. The study also confirmed the importance of evaluation criteria and furthermore the need for detailed classification in the evaluation criteria.
