Results are a central element in recent public sector reforms in OECD countries. Performance evaluation is an essential part of government reform movement, which has been popularized since the 1990s. Governments across the globe have endeavored to achieve high performance and results of various government activities and programs. Evaluation is important in a results-oriented environment because it provides feedback on the efficiency, effectiveness and performance of public policies. In addltion, it is critical for policy improvement and innovation. In essence, it contributes to accountable governance.In this background, the purpose of this paper is to suggest direction for performance management in the local government. Specifically, this paper is to study the development and institutionalization of the performance evaluation model of local governments in Korea. This study of the performance evaluation model may be useful for administrative reform that nowadays gets popularity are in local governments for the accomplishment of high performance. Ultimately, it would be ideal if the performance evaluation of local governments is able to contribute to the establishment of performance-oriented management in each local government.
