At the end of 2020, four scholars (Paek Seung-ho, Heo Tae-gu, Kim Ji-yeong and Kim Ho) published a collection of books collectively entitled as the Jeongjo-hak Chongseo. The collection was comprised of four books that respectively examined four individual areas of King Jeongjo’s reign and his governance: Academism(文), Military(武), Ritual protocols(禮) and Law(法). Unlike prior studies, which showed a tendency of dominantly viewing Jeongjo and his era as a time that was aiming for modernity and evaluated the time accordingly, these four authors’ efforts represent a different approach to the subject matter, as they define Neo-Confucianism as a foundation upon which Jeongjo’s thoughts and actions would have developed. On that basis, they chose to examine various aspects of King Jeongjo’s ruling of Joseon in the late 18th century, and defined King Jeongjo as a reformative king who tried to overcome all the limits and problems of the time, especially by applying Neo-Confucian ideology -which believed in the humans’ moral autonomy- to problems and situations of the real world.
The most important merit of this group effort is that their works are built on their own philosophical struggles and their strong academic background. They set out to deal with the philosophy of an individual who lived through the latter part of the 18th century, but their eyes are firmly set on the Confucian politics of the entire Joseon period. They are trying to provide us with a modern answer to the ultimate question of ‘What is Neo-Confucianism?’, but most importantly they are trying to establish a new paradigm through which we could observe the history of the Joseon dynasty’s second half, with Jeongjo’s era as a focal point.
