In a democracy, everyone has the right to take part in the government of their country and have an equal opportunity to become a candidate for election. But this must be done according to the rules of engagement. Interested individuals are expected to join a political party for this purpose. Parties select their candidates for elective position through competitive primary election. The election is expected to produce party flag bearers for general elections .Essentially; the quality of the flag bearer determines to an extent the success of the party in general elections and its general performance while in government. Based on this, it is therefore expected that the conduct of primary election be open, democratic, participatory, transparent and credible in nature to ensure the emergency of a credible, able and acceptable candidate for general election capable of not only winning a free and fair election but also ensuring good governance while in power. However, the issue of primary election in Nigeria has become a do or die affairs particularly in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) party, where the quality of the contestants are down played for highest bidders and or anointed candidates of the ruling party caucus members. This common but unfortunate and undemocratic practice tends to have probable consequences on democratic sustenance and good governance. To this end, the study attempted a critical analysis of the conduct of gubernatorial primary elections of APC in Ondo and Ekiti State and their attendant implication on democracy and good governance. The study employed both primary and secondary methods to source its information. The study observed that the primary elections were elite driven, undemocratic, compromised, monitised and capable of negating the ideals of good governance. The study concluded that primary election be demonitised and conducted within the ambit of democratic ethos.
