Evidence-based research on the healing environment was first conducted by Ulrich and developed based on his psycho-evolutionary theory stating that the natural environment affects the space users’ stress. This study aims to derive design elements and guidelines for designing a healing environment by analyzing evidence-based studies on design factors of the healing environment that affect the stress of space users. The characteristics of design elements of the healing environment and user stress responses were categorized to set up the analysis criteria. A total of 191 related studies were extracted by conducting a keyword search on foreign literature search platforms Google Scholar and PubMed. Among the 310 papers in the 6 review articles most relevant to the evidence-based healing environment study, 18 case studies on space user stress response were analyzed in this study. Results showed that most of the studies were related to nature compatibility, and factors related to nature, such as actual natural views, natural scenery, natural objects, and sounds of nature, effectively reduce stress. Factors affecting the pleasantness, such as the use of green color that reminds of nature, natural light, and comfortable atmosphere space, were also found to affect stress reduction positively. Since not only visual factors but also auditory factors such as noise directly affect physiological stress response, the use of noise-absorbing finishing materials and low-noise environmental equipment planning is judged to help create a healing environment.
