Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere, published in 2019 with a great attention from mainstream society, describes a multicultural community, Shaker Heights, Ohio to see how American values are problematized with racism. The work specifically focuses on Mrs. Richardson, a white mother of four children and Mia Warren, photographer and black surrogate mother of Pearl. Believing that values such as order or rules should be preserved for the community, Mrs Richardson also forces her siblings and even others to accept the values as a way to reinforce the stability of Shaker Heights. However, the paper argues that those values are mainly aimed to maintain a white-centered American family system when they are invaded by Mia, artist and mother of a daughter, Pearl. It also suggests that Mrs. Richardson’s dream of the idealized family and community based on the values is no better than an illusion when she realizes that the values are deconstructed by Mia’s artistic and nomadic lifestyle. Mia’s lifestyle illustrates the possibility of creating a new type of family based on emotional bond in the relationship between her and Izzy, Mrs. Richardson’s fourth daughter.
