The two years from 2020 to 2021 will be remembered as a period of global adversities due to the pandemic. Despite the worries about the shrinkage of academic activities, the research of East Asian history has not been directly impacted. The publication of papers and books has been on the rise as in previous years, and academic activities resumed through the use of online meeting.
The purpose of this article is to summarize the academic trends of the past two years and to make a few proposals. First and foremost, in the section of ‘Retrospective and Prospective’, the study of Japanese pre-modern history could be composed into two separate fields. A vast amount of research on the pre-modern history of Japan carried out in the last two years, producing more than 260 publications. Such a large amount is too heavy for a single commentator to handle.
Secondly, adjustments could be made in regards to the periodization of modern Chinese history. Currently, the range of 50 years from 1840 to 1911 is generally acknowledged as modern Chinese period. Compared to other periods, a span of fifty years is too short to be considered as a separate historical period. Furthermore, modern history research topics exhibit an increasing overlap with Ming-Qing period and contemporary history. More flexible approach towards the periodization is recommended.
