Gwangju City lacks urban infrastructure due to small and sporadic housing supply and development restrictions. In addition, citizens recognize the city"s major development tasks as transportation, roads, and education issues. In particular, Gwangju City has a longer commuting time, higher personal transportation utilization rate, and lower walking utilization rate than other neighboring cities (Seongnam-Si, Yongin-Si, Hanam-Si, Icheon-Si) because it is far from residence to school.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to plan bus routes and analyze the feasibility of bus operation so that students can go to school by public transportation from their residences to schools located far away. To this end, a school trip survey was conducted on students in Gwangju to collect data on the current status of school trips and inconveniences in public transportation. In addition, schools with poor bus services were selected through bus service analysis (distance to stop, number of transit bus routes) for each school. Through the analysis, a total of six school bus routes were planned for middle and high schools, and priorities were selected by estimating the demand for each route and calculating the benefits (Kyunghwa School-group, Gwangju Gwangnam Middle School, Gwangju Middle School, Tanbeol Middle School, Shinhyun Middle School, and Maeyang Middle School).
In order to operate school bus routes for each school, it is considered desirable to determine the improvement of road traffic conditions, location of new bus stops, and type of shelves through consultation with schools and students. And school commuting conditions will change as the population of Gwangju is soaring recently. Therefore, in order to cope with these changes, it is necessary to secure professional administrative personnel and establish a bus operation management system.
