This study concerns North Korean military indoctrination. In it we explore the individuals, locales, methods, and processes through which military indoctrination takes place and how such effects are manifested in the North Korean military"s political ideology. To this end, we have taken a qualitative approach and have interviewed eight former North Koreans who have experience with the aforementioned military indoctrination. The summary of our results are as follows:
First, North Korean soldiers follow a regimented schedule and receive political ideology training daily between 9:00-11:00 under the supervision of an adviser focusing on the "Five Tenets of Political Education"(5대교양). Second, this ideological training can be divided into two categories(Ⅰ) daily lessons focused on the foundation of NK political ideology, and(Ⅱ) specialized weekly lessons centered around implementation of political thought. Third, North Korean military political advisers are responsible for the mental training of soldiers and are more involved with Troop Information and Education, political ideology training evaluator and watcher than their South Korean counterparts. Forth, while lessons have historically been delivered through lectures, seminar-style formats have been implemented more recently. Fifth, despite the long history of institutionalized education, it does not appear to be that effective.
Our conclusions are as follows. First, the North Korean military has played and continues to play a vital role in the ideological indoctrination of soldiers for their ten years of service. Second, soldiers are mandatorily required to receive such lessons regardless of their own will, amounting to approximately 524 hours of education which is greatly higher than their south Korean counterparts. Third, The North Korean political ideology center(정치지도원) is the primary office responsible for this education and has a large impact on the education of soldiers. Fourth, while the lessons do not appear to be that effective it does have an impact on their internal ideas. Fifth, the Kim Jong-Un revolutionary soldiers" mental fortitude does not see high.
