Considering the lack of research on the role of social capital in informal Korean waste picking, this qualitative study sought to examine the role of social capital within the livelihoods of elderly Korean waste pickers in Incheon City, South Korea. This study analyses the various types of relationships of the Korean elderly poverty in relation to social capital and advances our understanding of their livelihoods. Semi-structured and informal interviews were used to capture the voices and working experiences of elderly waste pickers. Findings show that waste pickers formed long-lasting relationships with local residents and businesses, based on mutual benefits, reciprocity and altruism, which further became forms of social capital that facilitated their waste collection. Moreover, altruism could be conducive to social capital, initiating longer-lasting relationships. Overall, this research explored an under-researched topic, hoping to bring greater awareness to the livelihoods of waste pickers in developed countries.
