While visibility is an important element for the fear of crime in interior and exterior spaces of school buildings, pedestrian movement is an element that significantly affects the fear of crime that students may experience on routs to school. This study suggests empirical evidence for the relationship between pedestrian movement and fear of crime in environments using an automated quantitative analysis method. First, this study tried to generate an axial map which shows pedestrian movement on routs to school around two elementary schools in Songpa District, Seoul. Then, a survey was conducted on elementary school students about the locations where they felt fear of crime on routs to school and the reasons why they felt fear of crime. After that, the survey findings and the axial map were analyzed comprehensively to investigate how the high or low pedestrian movement affects students’ fear of crime. In general, locations with lower pedestrian movement showed higher levels of fear of crime. However, fear of crime also increased with high pedestrian movement. In other words, pedestrian movement has a dual nature by increasing and decreasing the fear of crime in the environment. It is anticipated for the research findings to suggest base data to identify locations so that safety on routs to school around elementary schools can be enhanced and improve the environment in order to decrease the fear of crime in locations with low pedestrian movement as well as locations with with high pedestrian movement.
